    Candidates that successfully complete a food safe course will receive a certificate that states the level of certification (level 1 or 2). This certificate does not expire, however, some employers require that employees renew certification after a period of time. Individuals may also be requested to renew certificate by a health inspector.

    Who is required to take Food Safe Certified Courses?

    Every chief operator / owner of a food service, handling or providing establishment must have a food safe certificate. If the operator is not present during operation hours one employee must be present who has a valid food safe certificate. These requirements are set by the BC Health Act.

    Course Content for Food Safe Certified Courses

    Candidates that take food safe training will learn proper food handling, storage and preparation techniques. Candidates will also learn proper sanitation and health standards. The key components of this course strive to create a healthy working and eating establishment. Candidates will learn effective techniques to prevent the following food borne illnesses:

    Course content of a foodsafe course will cover techniques to prevent the infection of these and many more foodborne illnesses. Candidates are required to take a multiple choice exam and receive a score of at least 75% to successfully complete the program.

    Course Length

    The length of a food safe level 1 course is 8 hours and is typically completed within one day. The length of a food safe level 2 course is 16 hours and normally requires two days to complete.

    Prerequisites

    No prerequisites are required for candidates that want to take food safe level 1. Candidates must have a food safe level 1 certificate to attend food safe level 2. Valid photo ID must be shown to instructor during the course.
